Editing Checklist

Some our common mistakes writing are: Run-On, Comma Splice, Tense, Spelling, Preposition, Comma/Spaces/Hard returns, Fragment, Subject-Verb Agreement.
I try to correct the exercise that our teacher, Joseph, gave us in the class:
1-      Pushpa goes to the store, because her husband, Kathigesu, is lazy. Also she doesn’t drive. She buys rice which weighs over a ton!
2-      O Canada, our home and native land, true patriot love, in all thy sons command!
3-      I went to sears with my family last week. Because it was raining, we didn’t drive. We took a taxi there. When we arrived, the store had closed.
4-      When they opened the window, it was raining. Even though we love soccer, we decided not to go to the stadium.
5-      We went to the mall even though we had no money. Johnny and Jimmy like to eat Italian spaghetti very much.
6-      In Montreal, he finally applied for PR. She likes to look at nature. So she enjoys taking pictures of leaves turning color in autumn.
7-      Every day we go to LINC class, and Sharon feels very tired after five hours. She must study harder. Last term she got 40% for ESL.
8-      After MicroSkills LINC, Kanesh moved to Vancouver and worked at Whistler Ski Resort.
9-      Pushpa  went to the store. Although he was tired, Kathigesu went with her. They took a train there.

Who is richer than Bill Gates?

Somebody asked Bill Gates, Is there any person richer than you?
Bill Gates said, yes, only one. Many years ago, I had been dismissal and I had gone to New York airport. I read titles of newspapers there. I liked one of them and I want to buy it. But I didn't  have change (coin). I abandoned, suddenly, a black boy called me and told, “This newspaper for you.” I said, but I don’t have change. He said, “No problem, I give you free”.
After 3 months, I went there. Coincidentally, that story happened again and that same boy gave another free newspaper again. I said, I can’t accept. But he said, “I give you from my profit.”
After 19 years, I had been rich and I decided to find that boy. I found him after one and half months searching. I asked him, do you know me? He said, “Yes, you’re famous Bill Gates.”
I said, you gave me free newspaper in 2 times many years ago. Now, I want to compensate it. I am going to give you everything that you want. Black young man replied, “You can’t compensate it!”
I said, why? He said, "Because I gave you when I was poor. You want to give me when you are rich. So, how do you compensate?"
Bill Gates said, I think that Muslim black young man is richer than me.

Nowruz (Iranian New Year)

Nowruz is the first day of spring and the beginning of the New Year in Iran and some other countries such as Afghanistan, Azerbaijan.
In Persian Nowruz consists two words, Now and Ruz. Now means new and Ruz means day. The Iranian  New Year starts on March 20, 21 or 22. The United Nations (UN) has registered March 21 for Nowruz.
Before Nowruz, Iranians clean their houses and wash their carpets and curtains. They prepare every thing for the beginning of the New Year. They cook sabzipolo (rice and vegetables) with fish at the last night of year.
The time of new year is different each year but the date is almost the same.
Iranians have Sofreh Haftsin. This means that they put 7 special thing that start with the letter S (in Persian) on a tablecloth:
Apple, garlic, grass ( wheat or lentil sprout), jujube tee, Samanu (like a sweet), coin, sumac.
These are symbol of health, fertility and wealth. Of course, they put a mirror, coloured eggs and a book there, too.
Schools are closed for 13 days and governmental offices for 5 days.
People put on new clothes and go to visit their relatives. They start from the oldest relative. Some people have to travel.
The 13th day of new year is Sizdahbedar. It means nature day. People go out in the morning until afternoon. They eat lunch outside. Finally, they tie grass.

Token Crisis

Today, the MicroSkills manager explained the latest budget cuts. She said the government slashed 40% of MicroSkills budget, So, MicroSkills can give only 2 tokens per day to each class.
I said, "MicroSkills can rent a bus for students". Then she said, "That is a good idea and we will look into it."
I think the main goal of the Canadian government is the success of Canada. If newcomers can improve themselves and find jobs, this country will be successful. Because nowadays economics is the most important thing in the world.
Finally, let me say to MicroSkills:
If you want to help us, learn how to catch fish, don't give us fish but teach us to fish instead!

Interview questions

  • How do you respond to tough situations?
First, I think about that problem and I try to find a solution for it. Also, I get help from my colleagues and boss. The important point is that I am patient and speedy.

  • If I were your boss, how could I keep you motivated to get the most productivity from you?
I can be motivated with extra training. I think update person can be creative and productivity. Also, my boss is patient, I can work without stress.

  • Tell me about a time that you challenged a school or company policy.
In my previous company, I tried to study that problem and find some logical reason for my challenge. Then I told to my boss. That if he didn't accept my reason I would be still company's policy.

Maple syrup trip

MicroSkills students and teachers went to  the maple syrup festival on Wednesday, March 30. The weather was very nice, and that place was good. I learned about making and cooking maple syrup. But I think MicroSkills organization was weakness. However, I took some pictures from there and my classmates. You can see them below. I like the school bus because when I was child I used to see it in a cartoon.

Adjective or Adverb?!!!

When I read about adverbs and adjectives I will be confused. So I decided to explain adverb and adjective shortly.
I’m very thankful to Joseph. He introduced Tense buster in library’s website to me. You can learn completely about adjective and adverb there. (www.torontopubliclibrary.ca)
Adjective or Adverb?!!!
We use adj. to describe nouns. We use adv. to describe verbs.
For example, we say “His work is accurate.” And “He works accurately.”
Most Adv. Are made by adding -ly to the adjectives. But be careful: not all words ending ly are adverbs. These words are adjectives: silly, friendly, lovely, leisurely.
Note: we use verb + adj. to say how someone looks, seems, is getting.
Here are some examples:
How do doctors attend to the patients? They do it continuously. (adv.)
There is a slow move towards … (adj.)
We are moving slowly towards … (adv.)
You can be sure that employers are watching developments closely. (In this example closely mention to verb not to noun.)
There is a serious need for new medication. (Need is noun)
We seriously need to new medication. (Need is verb)
Some adverbs have the same form as the adjective. Here are three examples:
You’re working very hard. (Hard=adv.)
He drives much too fast. (Fast=adv.)
She arrived late again. (Late=adv.)

March break

This March break I was alone. But I found my friend by face book. He invited me for dinner. He is professor of york university.
Also, I helped to my friend for publish his advertisement in woodbriedge. He sell and install Air condition system. Last Friday, I went to my friend pizza store and I saw to make pizza there. That was wonderful for me.
I toke 2 appointments for prepare my resume from Microskills. Unfortunately my time was wasted because the consular don't help me well. I think almost anybody don't help completely to newcomer. They only say and don't do that well and completely, I don't know why because government pay money to them for helping to newcomers.(Welcome to Canada!!!)

I think it's better that government will pay money for training people in theirs job until pay money to companies like Microskills.

I hope next March I will go traveling with my wife not alone. I will find a job after I learn English.
I can't buy car, house before I earn money. I must find a job here as soon as my money finish.

An Iranian Ceremony(The Last Wednesday of Year)

چهارشنبه سوری
Wednesday Soori Celebration is the name of an ancient celebration from 1700 BC in Iran. Originally this ceremony was to last 5 days in each Iranian year. But now it is on the last Wednesday of each year.
Wednesday Soori consists of two words, Wednesday and Soori .  Soori means red. When someone is jumping over the fire he reads “سرخی تو از من زردی من از تو”. In fact it represents catharsis (cleaning from bad things). That means you want the fire rid your diseases and problems (yellow) and give you energy, healthy and warmth (red).
This celebration isn't religious.
Some ritual Soori are:
  1.  New Year, new jar
  2.  Ø¢Ø¬ÛŒÙ„ مشکل گشا (problem solving nuts)
  3. (قاشق زنی)Ghashoghzani
1-      In the past, Iranians would drop old clay jars from the roofs of their house. They believe that the problems passed away in the New Year. Of course, nobody does that now.
2-      In the past, people used to roast watermelon seeds, pistachios, hazelnuts, almonds, wheat and hemp over the fire that night. The nuts were the last of the winter storage. Nowadays, Iranians buy the مشکل گشا  nuts (problem solving nuts).
3-      Another tradition is Ghashoghzani (قاشق زنی ).The young boys and girls hide themselves below the stuff and go in front of their neighbours's house. They hit to bowl with spoon. The neighbour comes out and gives chocolate, nuts or money to them.

Story (1) - intresting opinion of a mathematician about man & woman

One day some one asked a mathematician, "What is your opinion about man or woman(the man)?"
The mathematician replied, "If a man or woman has morals, then s/he is equal 1 (man or woman=1).
If s/he is beautiful, then we will set 0 after the 1 (man or woman=10).
If s/he has money, then we will set another 0 after the 10 (man or woman=100)
If s/he has lineage, then we will set another 0 after the 100 (man or woman=1,000)
But If the human removes the number 1 (morals) from this formula, then only 0 remains and the number 0 has no value by itself, So that man has no value".

Time Table

Today I want to creat a table about kinds of verb tenses. In fact, this table doesn't include passive verbs. If this table is good, please give your comment.

First lesson - Don't be bored

Today was the my first day of  English class. I learned if everybody isn't bored, then he/she is very successful.
